An original print or a later edition?
2026-10-07
The image and the physical impression have different histories. An original artist’s print and an edition made later from an existing image should be compared within their own categories.
Three questions before choosing
- Was the image conceived for this printmaking process?
- Who published and printed the edition, and when?
- What documentation identifies this specific impression?
Copyright permission, printmaking originality and a handwritten signature describe different facts. If an edition is described as authorized, ask who issued that authorization and what it covers.
