Edgar Negret
Geometry and movement in sculpture.
Born in Popayán, Edgar Negret was a central figure in modern Colombian sculpture. He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Cali and was influenced by Jorge Oteiza. In New York he developed his Magic Apparatus series: geometric constructions in painted aluminium, assembled with visible nuts and bolts. Later series evoke nature, the Andes and pre-Columbian art through planes, curves, rhythm and colour. He returned to Colombia in 1963; his legacy connects the country’s cultural traditions with an international sculptural language. Their work and legacy can be explored at Casa Museo Negret & MIAMP · Popayán and Museo Edgar Negret · Bogotá.
